A three-member team led by Bhutanese refugee leader Tek Nath Rijal met former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress (Democratic) president Sher Bahadur Deuba Tuesday on a drive aimed at rallying support for democracy in Bhutan.
Deuba is said to have assured the refugee leaders of his party’s full support in the movement to establish democracy in Bhutan.
Other refugee leaders in the team included Balaram Poudel and Thinle Penjor.
Similarly, the team also met Nepal Workers’ and Peasant Party chairman Narayanman Bijukche the same day. In the meeting, the communist leader expressed his solidarity towards the movement of the Bhutanese people for self-determination.
The Bhutanese government has been lately toying with the idea of democracy. On April 22 it staged a mock poll as a rehearsal for the parliamentary elections scheduled for 2008, the first in country’s history.
